Any warnings before I buy a Nokia 3650

After seeing one in action, and reading about cool midlets available I think I need to buy myself a Nokia 3650

However, it’ll cost me a fair amount of money and I want to be sure that it’s the phone for me. Does anyone know if the J2ME support still suffers from the problems that Russel Beattie noticed with the 7650?.

Also, for those of you who use it. Do you find the keypad odd? I’m a fairly heavy SMS user and if it takes a bit of getting used to then maybe I’ll think twice. Though I did adjust to a Kinesis Ergonomics Essential keyboard, so I’m sure a keypad won’t take too long either.

As I mentioned in an earlier post my main motivation for a j2me phone is to let me write applications that can connect to my server at home and do useful things for me. Say:

  • Rotate logs
  • Tell me the number of hits to my various webpages
  • Shutdown my desktop computer so I can save ten percent
  • And so on and so forth

Odds are I’ll be using SOAP and Python or Perl to do the server side of things, but I’d really like to write the client code in Java.

Is this something the phone will let me do? Or will I end up frustrated with a funny looking phone whose keypad irritates me?

Don’t get that phone.

Get a P800 if you can afford it.

Personally, I found the keypad very difficult to use. Overall, I haven’t been that impressed with the unit.

I find the 3650 a terrific phone. It’s beautifully balanced for one handed operation and texting. I actually find the circular format easier for texting as it means that there are no central keys to ‘get in the way’ (something that Russell Beattie also attested to).

I’ve downloaded loads of software for it and have been very impressed by the stuff that is available for IM, FTP, email, etc.

Overall I couldn’t wish for much more from a mobile phone!
