I like movable type, I’m willing to pay for it, but I think the entire ecosystem of MT plugins may be fatally wounded by the new licensing.
Today’s announcement of movable type 3 has been greeted with scepticism and outrage. I’m not as worried as some of the other MT users seem to be, but I do have some concerns.
Charging doesn’t worry me, I buy software regularly and MT is a great application. Plus, it won’t affect me, I have 1 blog and 1 author. What worries me is that the heaviest users of MT, those with loads of blogs and loads of authors will be driven away.
These heavy users are the very reason that MT has such a great selection of plugins, and such an active community, $699 will drive those users away, and the great community will be driven away with them.
While I’m not likely to jump straight away, I will be investigating the possibility of moving this site to Roller or TextPattern. Just in case my concerns eventualise.
