Announcing Feed Your Reader
RSS Autodiscovery support in Firefox is a good first step. However, I already use a feed reader, to make my life easier I’ve written a firefox extension to allow external readers to benefit from the autodiscovery support.
The RSS autodiscovery feature in Firefox is great, however I wanted something more. As I already use the excellent FeedDemon, I figured I’d write an extension to allow you to use the feed:// protocol to subscribe to discovered feeds. Once you’ve installed FYR you’ll see a new Feed Icon (
) in the status bar, that behaves just like the live bookmarks menu. However, instead of opening the bookmarks menu, selecting an item will launch your Feed Reader.
Live Bookmarks is a really nice feature, however it’s no substitute for a good RSS aggregator. FYR’s use of the feed:// protocol should allow other aggregators, such as RSS Bandit, to also benefit. I’m hoping that this extension can help relieve the concerns of other bloggers.
So, without further ado I’m pleased to announce the availability of Feed Your Reader
The latest version is 0.5, I hope some of you find it useful. Any comments or feature requests, just leave a comment here, or drop me an email. I’m especially interested to hear from users of aggregators other than Feed Demon, and platforms other than win2k and Fedora Core 2. Thanks to Nick Bradbury, Jack Brewster and Albert J. Gyomber for their help testing.
Update FYR now has a roadmap

Very Nice. I was looking for something like this. Improvements I would like to see, have an option on hwo to display the button(s). Eg either replace the current RSS button or remove it and only from FYR. Its a bit annoying having both of them there at the same time…but other than that, very very useful !

Works just fine with Gush, tested on winXP. Thanks for the great extension.

Excellent, many thanks! Now, like Arvind says, all that’s left is to find out how to get rid of Firefox’ original RSS button. Otherwise I’ll certainly use the wrong square orange button half the time.

Great extension. The next update needs a right click option for pages that don’t show the live bookmark icon but have rss feeds like http://news.yahoo.com/rss.

What’s your aggregator?

Excellent extension for Firefox! I’ve been waiting for someting like this. I’m using Sage 1.2.2 for quick looks of sites that have RSS feeds, but my main reader is FeedDemon. Thanks for ensuring it works with the latest Firefox release!

Hi Michael,

Very nice, Michael, thanks for developing it. It works fine for me with FeedDemon.
One curious thing, though. You say it adds an FYR icon to the status bar in Firefox, replacing the RSS icon. My installation of 0.6 didn’t – the RSS icon is still there, no FYR icon. Functionality works fine though. (Just noticed another comment on this.)
I’m using FF 1.0PR and FD 1.11.03, Win XP Pro SP2.
