Roadmap for FYR

Feed Your Reader has become pretty popular, and I’ve received a large number of interesting requests. So, we now have a roadmap.

Wow, FYR has really taken off I’ve been reading all the feedback people have provided and developed the following release plan.

Version 0.6

I’ll release 0.6 this evening (NZST) Version 0.6 has been released, the key feature here is the rationalisation of the feed icons. FYR replaces the existing Live Bookmarks icon. Selecting a feed from the menu launches your feed reader, to add a live bookmark, hold down control or shift while clicking. I’ve also updated the code to be slightly more modular and support the new extension standards.

Version 0.7

Version 0.7 won’t be too far away, probably this weekend. The main new feature here will be support for aggregators that don’t support the feed:// protocol. My goal is to package support for as many different aggregators as possible. I’ll be adding an ‘other’ option to the preferences windows, but the more that work out of the box, the better. Phil has provided the necessary URL patterns for quite a few aggregators, if you know of any more please mail them to me or leave a comment / trackback here. At present I’ll be supporting:

  • AmphetaDesk
  • Awasu
  • Bloglines
  • Bot A Blog
  • Bottomfeeder
  • Fyuze
  • Headline Viewer
  • IzyNews
  • mobilerss
  • My Yahoo!
  • NewsIsFree
  • NewsMonster
  • nntp//rss
  • Radio Userland
  • Syndic8
  • Wildgrape NewsDesk
  • WinRSS

0.7 will also include a zip/tar release of the source including the build script. Making it easier for people to send me patches and try hacking it themselves. FYR is Open Source under a very permissive license. Hopefully people will be able make some use of this.

Version 0.8-1.0

After that, I plan on keeping FYR compatible with each new release of Firefox, and implementing any other great ideas you guys come up with.

Sure, if it’s as easy as a URL template, then I’ll do it for 0.7. But if it’s more involved than that, the sage devs could just take over the button just like I do.

WinRSS uses a special protocol, rss:// but you can also use feed:// protocol with WinRSS, no need for special considerations.
